Contemporary dance improvisation.
Coreographer, sound: Miguel Mesa
Mexico-Usa border. Mexicali, July 2009
Steps:
1) Think about 5-8 borders/limitations that you can find on your
society, country, goverment. can be anything you want, but congruent
2) Write them in order, from the simplest to the most complex, number them
from 1 to N in ascendent order.
3) Now get as many cardboard boxes as borders you wrote, again, every
box must represent the border/limitation so you can attach it to your
body and express this particular border in performatic ways. It implies
that the box will need to be bigger as the border becomes more complex.
I mean, 5-8 boxes, from little one to biggest you can get one.
4) With a marker write on the box the border it represents
5) Think in advance how will you represent by movements each border and
how will you attach each box on your body to make the border clear
6) The director yells number one (representing the simplest border for everyone)
7) The performance start with you puting the simplest "border" on your
body with or without tape (according to your need). You will move, dance
communicate with the others tryng to manifest how the border has influence
in your daily life, how do you get along with. Is it really limitating?
is it tough but you can live with it?
8) The director yells number two, repeat step 7 but with the second border
you chosen.
9) Repeat till the last border number any wrote.
NOTES:
- As long as the piece grows, you need to communicate with the others, trying
to surpase your borders-limits and theirs.
- You can always share the same border, I mean you can attach your boxes or
body with someonelses and move, dance together. As complex your borders become
the more people together will be, forming a mass of people-boxes more and more
limited and bordered. Dont forget to communicate.
- You can express anything you feel to. Language is also a border-limitation
- It is meant your movement to become stif and slow, lossing its ability to
communicate or move. In the end it is suggested to form a kind of wall of
people attached as a metaphore of the real big wall there... so try to get
as close as you can to the border wall and form another one just in front of
made from people and boxes.
- It is very important that the boxes must remain almost unbroken, you can make
holes on it but try to keep them visualy as a box, try not to destroy them
while the performance so in the end there will be a big mixture of boxes all
over you and the other performers.
